In today's class, we will discuss Modernism and read "Araby." Similar to "The Student," we have a naive journey punctuated by an "epiphany," and there are strong traces of metaphysical notions expressed through the setting. In Chekhov's case "realism" kept them at bay, but in Joyce's first person narrative there is a "dream like" surrealism that is present in the motifs of darkness and light.
