An Intro to "Modernism" and "Araby" by James Joyce

In today's class, we will discuss Modernism and read "Araby."  Similar to "The Student," we have a naive journey punctuated by an "epiphany," and there are strong traces of metaphysical notions expressed through the setting.  In Chekhov's case "realism" kept them at bay, but in Joyce's first person narrative there is a "dream like" surrealism that is present in the motifs of darkness and light.

Here is a link to a link to the story: https://www.plato-philosophy.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Araby.pdf

Before we begin, let's first examine Joyce and Modernism.

A bio of Joyce, quickly making light of the controversies, and how Joyce felt he could "write about anything."   A nice guy?  Not as nice as Chekhov.  Most writers are kind of messed up.
